Contrition

By C.F. Kelly

The pain I caused mother
was unintentional
because no one ever taught me
not to step on sidewalk cracks.

I hurt her much less
walking forest trails
covered in soft pine needles
or running on smooth asphalt.

I think I hurt her least
swimming distances
in the ocean of her womb
with hard kicks and sharp elbows.
